The names for hurricanes are predetermined by the National Weather Service division the National Hurricane Center and if not retired, recycled every six years. The first one this year was Ana the latest is Bill, the next hurricane will be Hurricane Claudette, the gender assignment of each hurricanes name alternates from female to male and back again.

As far as I know they go through the alphabet with a name for each letter - I think they also alternate between male and female names but I'm not totally sure - hopefully someone else has/will given/give a definite answer! :)
