From WikiAnswers and Wikipedia. Other sources such as the New York Times and USA Today confirm the number at 343.

According to this NY Times article, 341 New York City firefighters and 2 NYFD paramedics lost their lives on September 11th.

I remember hearing the number 343 being the number of New York City Firemen who died in the September 11th disaster.

** ok, something odd just happened. I had seen this question listed with a small number of views and no answers. So I clicked on it and sure enough, no answers, so I entered my answer. Once I entered my answer it then showed a larger number of views and three other answers. Had I seen it with three answers listed already I would not have added another answer to this question. A glitch in the system maybe? Has anyone else experienced the same thing? I just want to bring to attention, thanks all.
