Sci/Tech is usually good for plenty of good news. Here's one...

Robotic firefighting team debuts

A team of four robots of different kinds that work together to fight fires have been unveiled in London. They are designed especially for fires involving acetylene cylinders which are particularly dangerous for emergency services. Hot cylinders can explode up to 24 hours after the actual fire.

The robots have already successfully responded to 9 incidents this year during trials.

Here's some good news from the medical front: Junk food (or at least one of its ingredients) can be good for you, but only if it's injected. The food coloring used in blue M&Ms has been proven to reduce the damage caused by spinal injuries. Most of the nerve damage is caused by the body's natural response to the initial injury, and "Brilliant Blue G" blocks this response when injected intravenously into rats within 15 minutes of the initial injury. The only side effect is a temporary change in skin color.

That is interesting.

Makes you wonder how they discover things like that.
"Hmm. I have a Rat here with a bad back. Oh and some blue m&m coloring.
Let's experiment!"

Granted, from reading the article, it does get a bit more complicated than that..

So close, but so far. I did an experiment like that back in high school (dying an albino mouse blue), but I just wanted a colorful mouse. The mouse was unharmed. I think it was a different blue dye, used in microscopy.

In the news today a team from the University of Wisconsin has reported that the old advertising slogan "Guinness is good for you!" is true. The effect of Guinness vs ordinary beer, as I interpret it, is rather like the effect of red wine vs white wine.

This is good news for my wife, but not for me.

You see, for some unexplained reason, I prefer (get ready for gasps from @albanian) light beer.

My wife on the other hand loves Guinness (but only from the tap).

Back while in the states, every time we ordered, the waiter would return and give my (light) beer to my wife and place the Guinness in front of me.
I always waited until the waiter left to do the switcheroo.

I guess that is supposed to tell me something about my masculinity...

A mom and four year old boy was saved out of a burning SUV by off-duty firefighter brothers. They were burned, but alive.

I would say anything positive about the economy is a good news. In that category, "June New Home Sales Soar 11 Percent In US" is a good news.

http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2009/07/29/business/business-uk-usa-economy.html

"NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. home prices rose in May for the first time in three years, the latest sign suggesting the battered housing market is stabilizing, but a weakening job market hit consumer confidence in July and could prevent near-term economic recovery."

There are a couple of websites just dedicated for good news.

"My daily habit a year ago was to read the news with my morning coffee. I felt the entire world was falling apart and getting worse day by day. Then I read some research on the effects of bad news, and made a conscious choice to read uplifting stories... Now I’m excited about all the wonderful things around the world, instead of feeling helpless. When I read the stories on GNN I feel empowered, included, and encouraged to get involved. - Kerrie S., OK"

A million more Americans volunteered in 2008 than they did in 2007. With all the bad news you hear in the world, it is nice to hear some good news once in a while. There may be a lot of crime, but there are more people volunteering their time now. Some people do still care about others!

I found this on a site dedicated to only good news, but I couldn't read the whole story without subscribing. It looks like it is $2.00/month. Might be worth it to lift your spirits on a daily basis.

A Pakistan team set the Guinness World Record for tree planting, beating India in an international competition this month. Just 300 volunteers from the local fishing communities planted more than a half million young mangroves in one day, breaking the previous record of 447,874.
