My guess is that he wanted to make it more difficult for his body to be discovered, which seems to have worked because it took about 2 weeks for police to find him. When the body was found, it was already decomposing in a shallow grave and covered with dirt and leaves. I assume he covered himself as much as possible before shooting. As for exactly why he did this and his crimes, we may never know for sure. This man obviously wasn't mentally sound.
