I am very surprised in that he had said that he planned to run as a Republican. But it has become clear to everybody (including Senator Specter) that he was not going to win the Republican primary, and he did not want that to happen. So as a means of political survival, I guess it is not very surprising, especially considering how dire the polls looked for him. He would have been toasted in the primary. But running as a Democrat, he should run much stronger.

Not really he was never going to win the republican side and probably cut a deal so the democrats have the 60 vote majority they needed
