Characteristics of this climate include:
- "The average temperature is 2°C (36°F) in January and 19°C (66°F) in July, with an annual average of about 10°C (50°F).
- Clouds generally appear every day, and in the winter months fog often abounds, while rainfall occurs frequently.
- Average annual rainfall is about 76.5 cm (30 in).
- The mild, damp climate is ideal for dairying and livestock raising, but the limited sunshine restricts the growing of food crops."(http://www.nationsencyclopedia.com/Europe/Netherlands-CLIMATE.html )

Characteristics of the terrain include:
- Mostly coastal lowland and the land reclaimed from sea (polders);
- The land is low and flat.
- About half of the surface of the Netherlands is less than 1 m above sea level, and large parts of it (ca 24%) are actually below sea level.
- Hills are only in southeast of the country. The country's highest point is 1,053 ft above sea level.
- The Netherlands is located at three major European rivers (Rhine, Maas or Meuse, and Schelde).
