I think we could learn from Saddam Hussein who (it was recently revealed) lied about having WMD's so that he would not appear vulnerable to Iran. I think publicly agreeing to get rid of weapons makes the US appear weaker, and I think it's a foolish move.

Imagine if there were some people in your neighborhood who were thugs and known for doing radial things. You would not be more likely to make peace with them by telling them, "Don't worry. I got rid of all my guns." Instead, you would be more likely to be at peace with them if they knew you as the guy with the guns who practices shooting every weekend. They would respect your and your abilities and not cause trouble for you. Bullies pick on wimps, because bullies are cowards.

Iran and North Korea have leaders who do strange and radical things, like test launching rockets near our land. We need to make sure that they respect the military power of the US even not to attack us.

While I am a little uncomfortable with reduction of the number of weapons for our defense, I understand we have "more than we need". I'm not sure how that is quantified but maybe it's true. I do not believe that the world is more civilized than it was during the cold war era and large scale war a think of the past, but in 15 to 20 years when something big happens again, we'll probably want new ones anyway.

On the positive side the commercial space industry gets to use the rocket motors for their launches, so that good news for commercial launch vehicles.
