ACORN - the Association for Community Organizations for Reform Now - is a non-profit, non-partisan organization with headquarters in New Orleans, New York, and Washington D.C. There are 1,200 chapters in 110 cities, 40 states, per their own website.
Their primary function is to advocate for low-income and working class families on a variety of issues (housing, minimum wage, etc) throughout the U.S. One element of this is to promote voter registration and participation in this demographic.
They are not being investigated because there is little reason for an investigation to be conducted. John McCain accused them of "massive voter fraud" during the 2008 Presidential campaign, but Factcheck found his claim to be inaccurate. Much of the emotion stirred up against the organization seems to have originated during the campaign.
