Jeter is 35 years old, but is also having a career year. In 2001 he signed a 10-year contract (http://bit.ly/4xrGrw), putting him under contract through the end of the 2010 season. I could easily see him signing for another 2-3 years at the end of next season (38-40 feels like the right age for Jeter to retire - as reference, Cal Ripken retired at 40 and Ryne Sandberg retired at 37)
According to Baseball-reference.com (http://bit.ly/11xvXs), Jeter has averaged just over 200 hits per 162-game season. If you add 3-4 more seasons to his current totals, I don't think it's a stretch to think that he could end up with between 3,300 and 3,500 hits (landing him in the top 10 all-time) by the time he is done.

He could prolong his career by doing moves that other players have made (Lugo, Eckstein et. all) and move over to 2nd. It could actually happen as the Yankees will probably be looking at reasonably strong SS's coming up through other's systems down the road.

Now that Derek Jeter tied the Yankees career hits record, how much further will he go?
Derek Jeter tied the Yankees career hits record last night, previously held by Lou Gehrig. How far will he go above and beyond the record? How many more hits will he get in his career?

I'd say he'll get in the vicinity of 3,500 hits. He is averaging 1.28 hits per game for his career, which amounts to 208 for a 162 game season. Assume he gets about 30 more hits this season, putting his career total at 2,751. He is 35 and probably will be getting some extra days off over the next several years, so lets figure about 150 games played per season for the next 3 years, at which time he'll be 38. Assuming he keeps up the current pace of hits per game, that gives him an additional 576 hits, putting him at 3,327. If he plays another season with a little dropoff in hits, after all he'll be pushing 40, then he could reach 3,500. Shortstop is a demanding physical position. Should he wish to continue his career as a DH once he approaches and passes age 40, those career numbers could rise to the 3,600 to 3,700 hit range. But I'm guessing around 3,500.

I think he'll reach 3k and then finish out his contract. If he signs a 3 year contract to keep him playing until '13 and reaches the mark in '11 I don't see him retiring out since he hit "the number", he'll finish it out. He could prolong his career by doing moves that other players have made (Lugo, Eckstein et. all) and move over to 2nd. It could actually happen as the Yankees will probably be looking at reasonably strong SS's coming up through other's systems down the road.

There has been other Yankees testing positive, but thus far Jeter has not been one of them.
(I say thus far due to the list of players who tested positive still not fully exposed.)
