BIG NEWS: We're going to raise the automatic .25 tip to $1 for 10 days.

We've had a great success putting a .25 tip from Mahalo on un-tipped questions. During the .25 test over the past ten days we've seen an increase in the number of overall answers by almost 50%.

Many of these questions are still open, so it clear that putting a .25 tip on them has really helped. We want to try a second test: putting a full Mahalo Dollar on each untipped question.

The goal is really to grow two factors:

1. the number of answers per week.
2. the number of answers per question (we average around 1.5-1.8 answers per question).

If the average breaks through the two answer average and starts hitting three it's *possible* that Mahalo might continue this program beyond the 10 days.

From our research (i.e. talking to you guys), the key finding is that most of you don't answer the questions for money, but rather for the fun of it, for recognition, to help people and because you enjoy the community.

However, being able to make an extra M$50 to M$200 a month means you can spend a little more time here. It seems that the top users are both very into the community and very into making some spare changes--and it's the top users who we see giving the great answers.

Our focus is really around building the top 100 members into a strike force that tackles all questions with their big, huge beautiful brains and kind hearts. The compassion, kindness and "Mahalo spirit" is our killer feature! :-)

One funny thing I've even heard is that some folks are answering questions during their day jobs--double-dipping (so to speak). If you're a librarian or video store clerk and your boss let's you surf the web between customers I say "double dip for the win!" :-)

I'm really interested to see what happens during this test. Could we jump to three solid answers per question? If we did that means we're REALLY helping people and we have created a really helpful business.

Note: To the VERY small number of folks who might consider this a chance to game the system I highly recommend not doing that. We're going to find out if you do and you'll risk having your account temporarily suspended. Repeat offends will suffer at the hands of the MAPD run by big @Mike! :-)

What do you guys think... can we get to three good answers a question or what?!?! :-)

Wowweee, thanks!

Considering that you also started the Twitter connection during this time, do you think it skewed results any of the quarter test? If you don't introduce anything new in the next 10 days, that should help clarify results of this experiment.

Oh, wait, I forgot about Spring Break....lots of smart kids with time on their hands...

I think we can. Not only will this boost up the answer count, but the extra money will definitely entice new people to join Mahalo. And with more newcomers, we can be sure to see a lot more answers. I just hope that this will not cause an abnormal amount of spam.

One question: Is that average for all questions or for just non-tipping questions?

About the raising the tip. It sounds really awesome, and I bet that there is going to be a spike in both questions and answers on the site. However, I think there is one thing that might be getting overlook. A good percentage of the tipping questions are M$1, which will be the exact same amount as the non-tipping questions. That is going to knock down the amount of tipping questions, because when someone could just get a M$1 question for free and maybe one or two less answers than a M$5 question, they probably won't pass up the opportunity. Overall I think its a good idea, and the total number of question will probably go up, but the amount of money being tipped regularly will almost certainly go down.

Will pull the stats on tipped vs. non-tipped. In general the tipped questions get 2-10x the response in half the time. Thus the reason we're thinking of rolling this out across all questions.

In terms of tipped questions I think the people tipping will still do it because they get to be at the top of the page. Also, we may make the minimum tip $2 or something. Who knows, we'll figure it out after we see what the test results in.

The real goals here are to:

a) to over-service the folks asking questions.
b) increase the amount of unique content on each question (this helps how our pages are indexed in search engines).
c) get more traffic to each page (which results in the ads being clicked).
d) get more answerers into the system... which brings us back to point (A)!!!

I'll do my part! And since I'm more than the third person to answer this question, if everyone who has already agreed does their part, my guess is that you'll get your 3 answers per.

Going back through the pages today, though, I notice several questions have been asked more than once in the last 24 hours. My guess is that they askers got no response/minimal response the first time, so they asked again. Is this the normal pattern?

That's all we can do... listen. Now it's up to the community to pay Mahalo back during this experiment by writing original, helpful answers.

It very important that people take the time to write really good answers... not just cut and paste a Wikipedia or About.com page into the system. I'm hoping all the purple and brown belts will keep letting others in the community how to make their answers better.

That's why I'm telling folks it's just a test. We'll see how it goes. Hopefully folks will stick around after the test and we'll get some more tippers coming in... or, who knows, we do such a good job answering them that they get ranked on search engines well enough to generate the AdSense revenue that makes the .75 work!

I'm sure it will work out fine, just like the initial M$0.25 test run did. It will encourage more people to browse through those questions, and that's all you need to get more (substantial) answers.

Getting cca three answers per question sounds like a reasonable expectation, too. Keep in mind that a number of simple-fact-seeking questions are answered satisfactorily by the first response, and therefore will likely have only that one answer to them, no matter what. The more demanding questions will easily solicit three A's per Q, at least.

Ha!

Well, this is just a crazy test that we came up with. If we get 10,000 questions and it cost us $7,500 we're hoping that we make some % of that back when folks click on the AdSense.

Say AdSense clicks pay .20 on average. If we spend $7,500 we need to get back 5x that in clicks (37,500 clicks). That's 3.75 clicks per question page.... call it four clicks.

If some pages get 20 clicks and other none... we just might be able to make this model work. Especially if folks start asking questions about high-paying keywords like travel, shopping, money, mortgages, etc. In fact, if you have question about a topic like that do ask it! :-)

You also have to take into consideration that not every $M1 is cashed out. There are people who are recycling it back into the community, and those who just hoard it. The greatness behind the Mahalo Dollar is that there could be infinite Mahalo Dollars, if every member earning over a certain amount decided they would not cash out a certain amount. It's basically a virtual economy here.

You'll get the 3 answers for sure if it stays at an automatic Mahalo funded $1. Your just raising the stakes on the game. The people that barely decide to tip $1, will be the only ones in question of putting up $2 to out-weigh the "blinds," and their question will still be asked anyway, even if it goes to the "blinds." The prospect of less askers at that rate, will result in a potentially smaller "asking pool," and easily entice enough people to equal the same amount of total tips, as long as there is at least half the questions. That and the fact that many people believe that, the higher the cost, the higher the value, which may or may not be true. Ultimately, it will exponentially raise the total value. Ha-ha-ha. Superb. (LOL)

I think this is a very exciting idea! I think that many users are already encouraged to respond by the desire to write helpful answers and have them tagged as the best answers to help build status.

More money typically doesn't hurt as a carrot. My only concern is that while you'll be virtually certain to increase the number of answers per question, it's possible that there will be more duplicates. If someone asks for a fact such as, when and where was joe x born and someone immediately responded correctly, it doesn't make sense for there to be two more answers by different people with the same exact fact as a short answer.

I do see that type of thing sometimes and it can be perceived as stepping on someone else's toes by duplicating an answer later and I think there will be more of this type of competition.

2) I'm thinking, "Gee, Jason is going to have pay M$1 for every little question I ask? Some of them, even I don't think are worth a buck! Some of them are just bug reports and such!"

I think you're absolutely right that a pool of great answerers are the killer feature of Mahalo Answers, and this should definitiely motivate and boost that pool of people.

#2 is a good point. If someone texts in for a simple phone number which takes all of 2 seconds to look up, is it really worth it for Mahalo to shell out a dollar? And considering the amount of untipped questions from Twitter, can Mahalo afford to pay $1 each and still make a profit? But what Jason said in a comment above about AdSense does make sense (no pun intended), so maybe it'll work. We'll see. :)

Yes, if the model of Mahalo adding a tip works at all, there's not a lot of point in working out which questions to do it for.

A dollar is not really a lot to pay if you are getting great content that people come to read and which brings in the advertising bucks.

I think it's a great idea, and will surely be very successful. I believe this spirit of innovation (thx to Jason) will be key to making Mahalo a roaring success!

Just one point though - going by the number of answers I see, I had assumed Mahalo was already averaging about 3 answers per question... do you calculate it in a straightforward manner, or is there some complicated algorithm behind it all?

BTW, I confess - I'm doing it for the money, and having waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much fun in the process. I just hope that others are enjoying themselves as much too!

And Jason, once again, thank u for a phenomenal idea and the platform to make it a win-win for all.

This will certainly make me answer more questions :-)

Other features I'd like to see:

Some times I go to answer a question and somebody has gotten there first with a great answer. I always mark these as helpful and move on. It would be nice to have something stronger; I'd like a vote for the best to flag the one that is accurate when some of the other answers are really just opinions. Maybe higher belts (green+) get this vote?

Another thing I'd really like to see is the ability to add a key point to an existing great answer as opposed to a reply. Maybe an addendum that requires approval?

Keep it up.

What we really still need is a way to customize our main page with filtered questions. And, a way to filter out twitter in particular.

It's just too much trouble paging through the questions without a subject filter. And, if there was a useful filter, it would also be an improvement to allow two or three categories per question.

I think its very possible, but possibly have to exclude twitter questions if they keep getting spammed through.
The only other thought is that some questions have very definite answers "what date was X released in the US?" for example, so multiple answers to a question like this would be a waste of resources all round.

But as far as the dollar tip goes, that's cool. It should garner a much larger response to those infamous "grey" questions at the bottom of the screen. I know you probably can't/won't say, but just out of curiosity, what impact did the $0.25 have on the mahalo bottom dollar? Did it raise revenues? Drop them slightly? A $0.75 giveaway seems like an awfully big thing, though your explaination shows how it CAN work...I'm just nosey and like to know the details...=P

I'm glad this is working, but I'm a little surprised too. I can't imagine many people answering these questions for the money, since it seems you would be earning far less than minimum wage. But it sure is fun to be able to answer somebody's question whenever I can provide some insight about a subject I happen to know about.

Again Bravo Mahalo for not being afraid to put your money where your community is, like you say if it works the pay off is big for you and for us!

There was a question a few days ago about how to increase tips, I answered the question and got best answer for it. My solution was for Mahalo tipped questions, the asker meets the value of the Mahalo tip. If it is a quarter that Mahlo puts on the question then the asker also adds a quarter.

If the value is increased to one dollar then it is a level playing field. my two cents.

Let us giver and get er done! Three answers is not a huge average at all. If we increase traffic by a small percentage that will increase the answers given by a large percentage, if each member answers say,, three or four questions a day. So add 1,000 memebers and you will add three or four thousand answers.

I think it is a great idea, maybe it will increase the tips offered by members and thus generate better answers.

It's not clear to me how the automatic tip is applied to answers to questions that are asked via Twitter. (Apologies if this has been asked previously.)
