Also, a question about the gift cards. Will they be American Express/Visa or brand gift cards?

I don't feel too comfortable giving out my personal information for a few bucks.
Once your info is out there you don't know how it will or wont be protected.
I have seen what can happen to someone. As an example my father had an identity theft issue come up and he is still in the process of cleaning up the mess. So there is reason for concern.
Even with that said I think that Mahalo is a fair place and they will work on a great solution for all.

Announcement - W9 Policy Update
We have decided that for the first payment we send to you, there is no W9 required. In order to receive a second payment, regardless of the amount, you will need to fill out a W9 for us.
In the next 2 months or so we should be launching the ability to cash out with a gift card, which will not carry the same W9 requirement.

Interesting. I thought you had to do this already. At least W9's are super easy to fill out. Also, a question about the gift cards. Will they be American Express/Visa or brand gift cards?

If it is practical, perhaps you could do the Amazon gift/coupon cards. I get those from time to time when I cash my small change at a change-counting machine. It must be easy to automate. And it's easy to spend too! They sell most everything including books I often use as sources.

A W9 is a form used by third parties to file an information with the IRS on payments made to others. It's only your name, address, and taxID number which is either your social security number or employer identification number. Either one works. These forms are never sent to the IRS, but instead are reported on a 1096 or 1099. This is why no one likes the IRS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IRS_Form_990

Mahalo wants to obey the law, and they optimistically think people will earn over $600 in a year. I'm in favor of obeying the law, but I'll believe the amounts when I see them. So far after 4 months or so only 7 people are on track to do so, and I think some of them are Mahalo employees anyway.

If the cutoff point is say $600 that's when a W9 should be filled out, I see no reason to give out personal information for a few bucks here and there its not worth it.

I agree, And smokenherb (as weird as the name and avatar might be) has a point.
It's kind of a waist of time to have people filling out these forms for only a couple of bucks, i also think that for the sake of people in the US's sanity this should start kicking in when someone starts making anything over atleast 400$ respectfully.
Covering both mahalo's but AND the users.
Since all of the users are agreeing to wait for their money until they hit 40 mahalo dollars to curb abuse, mahalo should equally show some class.
Anything else would be uncivilized.

I don't work in any capacity whatsoever for Mahalo.
I do however make money online in a variety of affiliate programs, advertising revenue, etc, etc.
I can tell you that W9's are VERY (very) common.
Usually, W9's are simply part of the registration process. If you're not a U.S. citizen, you simply provide a non-US address and that's the end of that.
It's not about privacy. It's about the I.R.S.
They want to know where your income comes from. They need to track and validate it. There's no choice for you.
Take it up with your government if you think there is a problem.

There are many places (UPS Store for example) that rent mail boxes. Some of these places even provide a simple (no box) forwarding service.
So for $10 - $30 a month, you can protect your privacy.
Give everyone the P.O. box (or suite number) address. You'll have a legal address and your privacy will be safe.
Again, this strategy is VERY common when making any sort of money online.

These are all just in the idea phase right now, but I spoke with Tony of Zappos in Vegas last month and he was interested!!! :-)
It's in the words.
In most other cases, people would have to pay large shipping, brokerage, tax and other related fees.
Also, gift cards are less valuable then they were before the economic downturn was announced. This Christmas, gift card sales declined (in Canada anyway) in favor of non-expiring, no-restriction, cold hard cash.
