NEW FEATURE: More belt levels!!!
We've added a new feature today which doubles number of levels in the system. Between belt levels you will obtain a "tip" or "stripe." These are very easy to recognize when you look at a user icon. For example my icon currently shows a purple belt with a brown tip indicating that I'm a purple belt but half way to brown belt.
Yes, we understand that we now have two types of tips in the system (belt and a gratuity).... sorry for that.
Also, we could have done a bunch of belt levels of various colors but we wanted to keep it traditional. We do understand the argument for doing more colors of tips, however our goal here is to have each level mean something. Right now here is what the belt mean in my mind:
White: "Hello world!"
Yellow: "I'm not only here, I've actually done something!"
Green: "I'm new, but I've done a bunch different things and I understand what we're doing here."
Purple: "You know me, you know my avatar and I'm not going anywhere."
Brown: "Hello, I've not only been around here a long time, but I've had my work checked and I'm the real deal."
Black: "I'm here to help... what can I do for you?"
The tips will now show that you are closer to the next level.
The tips are intended to show your *transition* not that you've arrived a level.
What do you think the belt levels stand for?

M$To me:
White = I just got here. I'm an unknown commodity.
Yellow = I've done a bit, and I know my way around a little. I may have tons of professional knowledge but no one here has seen much of it yet.
Green = I'm making an effort to answer questions. I have a bit of a track record so you can see if my answers are worthwhile or not.
Purple = I've answered lots of questions. You probably are familiar with me by now, and I have some trustworthyiness.
Brown = No mistaking who I am! I'm all over the place here, so many of my thoughts and opinions are out there. Chances are when I answer a question, it will be at the very least helpful, if not the best answer.
Black = Take it to the bank. My answers are excellent and I'm known as a helpful person. If I were an actor, I'd have an Oscar. (I think, because we don't have a black belt yet!)

M$Not so serious version:
White = Help! I'm a complete newbie!
Yellow = I'm a newbie.
Green = I'm no Darcy, but I'm pretty hot stuff!
Purple = I spend way too much time on Mahalo Answers!
Brown = I am Darcy. Tremble before my awesomeness!
Black = I am God.
The tips haven't had time to take on a meaning for me yet. Other than "I'm an X, but nearly a Y".
Slightly more serious version:
White = I'm new around here. For all you know, I may be:
a) The next Einstein
b) Unable to write coherent sentences.
c) Possibly both of the above.
Yellow = Either:
a) I like what I see here, and I'm giving it a good try
b) I am a spammer.
Green = Either:
a) I write great answer on selected topics
b) I write a lot of answers on lots of topics
Purple = Either:
a) I write great answers on lots of topics
b) I have been here a heck of a long time, and write an awful lot
Brown = Either:
a) I have Google-fu incomprehensible to the average person
b) I am extraordinarily knowledgeable and helpful
c) I am locked in a basement at Mahalo
Black = Either:
a) I have incredible Google-fu and wide ranging knowledge, and am tremendously helpful, and extremely productive
b) I have been locked in the basement at Mahalo for a very long time

M$@Darcy... of course my answer was not entirely serious. In reality I never tremble at anyone's awesomeness. :)
However I do need to get out more.
While I thank you for the compliment, anyone who would tremble at my "awesomeness" needs to get out more.
*trembles before Darcy's Darcy-Fu*
White = Hi, I just signed up.
Yellow = Hi, I signed up last week. Still testing the waters.

Of course, this has little bearing on the people earning the belts. But that's what the colors mean to me. I have no interest in the Oriental Martial Arts.
And tips, well, that means tips. I don't get it with reference to belts.

M$This is a "Here is what I think, what is your opinion?" question. I welcome the chance to compare perceptions with the asker, and have no problem understanding his intention.
Since we don't have any way to communicate as a community apart from Q&A, we have evolved the convention that anything other than a straight question is flagged in caps, such as Jason's "NEW FEATURE:...",
Since everything is still eligible for answers and getting a best answer selected, it's also become the tradition to throw in a little side question along with these non-questions.
Welcome to Mahalo Answers. As the founder and CEO sometimes I put announcements in the Q&A format.
Forgive me. :-)
he gave us his opinion on what he thinks the belt levels mean. then he asked us what we think the belt levls mean
