NEW FEATURE: Mahalo adds Twitter login! Sync your account now!

If you logout and login you'll see that Mahalo has added Twitter login!

You can connect your twitter account to your Mahalo account by:

1. Logout

2. Go to the login page again and click on Twitter login icon.

6. If you're excited about this let us know!

7. If you want to be my hero make a screen cast explaining "How to login to Mahalo Answers with Twitter" and post it to YouTube, etc. and post below!!!
Tip for best answer: M$4.20
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

At this point, twitter login is just used as another option to verify a member in our system. Right now, when logging in with twitter, all the authentication is done through twitter, and twitter sends back a response if it was successful (this is why the redirect to www.twitter.com is required). Using this response, the site then looks for a corresponding Mahalo account, and logs you into your Mahalo account. If one is not found, it will ask you to link an existing Mahalo account, and by entering your Mahalo account information, the system will now know that every time you sign in using twitter on the Mahalo site which Mahalo account is yours. If you select No Mahalo Account, a Mahalo account is created based on the twitter username received from twitter, and Mahalo will ask you to enter a valid email address (even give you M$1.00 to do so) in order to give yourself a full Mahalo account. Once an account is created or linked with a twitter account, the accounts remain linked on Mahalo. For example: if your twitter username is mahalo_fan, but your Mahalo username is fan_of_mahalo, when you log onto Mahalo using twitter, you use your twitter information on twitter's site to login (so you enter mahalo_fan when redirected to twitter). When you are sent back to Mahalo after authenticating, you will notice you are logged in with your Mahalo account, fan_of_mahalo. This is because the mahalo_fan twitter user's Mahalo account is fan_of_mahalo.

Using twitter login on Mahalo does not actually log you into twitter also (this is shown by going to twitter.com after logging into Mahalo using twitter, and twitter does not have you logged in).

To basically sum the current Twitter login is used only as another way to authenticate yourself on our site. Thus reducing the number of passwords and usernames you need to remember.

Thanks for the explanation.... although it seems like its just an extra security hole (albeit a small one) for no benefit to me.

Thanks for the feedback BrianM!

@philipy --- we will have some features like "one click tweeting" down the road. only connect if you want to use that or not have to remember more passwords.

you can connect your accounts by logging out and login in with twitter. super easy.

I already have Mahalo and Twitter accounts, and the usernames are not the same. Will this work for me? Is there a point in me using it, even if I can?

I might be missing something but, what does this do for me (and my twitter account) that logging into mahalo directly doesn't

Yes, I'm wondering what exactly happens as a result of doing this as well!

I was thinking the same thing. Perhaps an explanation of the benefits of linking my Twitter account to my Mahalo account is needed...

1. Soon you will be able to automatically tweet a question with one click.
2. new users will not have to remember a password
3. we *may* give little rewards to the first couple of folks to tweet/facebook a question to get the social media goodness going!

take a look at the image below.... imagine that you get listed in order for tweeting a question. first person gets .05, next person .04, then .03, .02 and then everyone else. 01.

could be a lot of fun.

My Twitter and Mahalo account are connected in social matrimony.

I think the upcoming idea of tipping based on how fast you tweet your answer is going to be fun. However, I rarely win at those things, but will enjoy seeing others reep the rewards!

I have a question to ask (unrelated to this one), so I'm off to post my first question here at Mahalo! =)

What does this do? Can I auto tweet answers, questions, or pages, or something, or is it just Mahalo's way of saying we support another site?

The day you add my site log in will be this site really takes off :-) That's the only secret I'm sharing with you right now, but I've got some really good ideas for Mahalo Answers Community. Oh, and if you have any ideas to share with me about partnering with Mahalo once my site launches, I'm open to talking to you, too!

Sounds exciting!

Is it possible to login with both facebook and twitter, or do you have to pick one with each login.

Also, will twitter and mahalo stay connected or would I have to connect with each login?

(I stay logged on via my computer so I rarely use the 'login')

What happens if my question is over 140 characters?

Will there be a link in the tweet that goes to the rest of my question?

I use Facebook but not twitter. Either way, I don't understand what the benefit(s) of logging in that way would be. It seems to me that there would be drawbacks, such as the slowness of Facebook, and that when you log out of an application on Facebook it disconnects from the other applications that you have open in Facebook.

I'm not arguing that there is no advantage to these logins, but I'd like to hear what they might be.

I for one would never want to clutter my Facebook page with Mahalo questions. It's more for personal stuff like photos and chat with friends.

I agree. The mahalo facebook app itself doesn't work so what does logging in with facebook do ? Just mean you can use the same login info ?

jasoncalacanis's Avatar

This simply makes it easier for NEW users to login into the system.... and for existing members to not have to remember their passwords/do one click login.

connecting Facebook allows you to post your questions and answers to your profile. i would certainly try that... it's very cool!

We considering giving people the ability to make .05 or .02 or something for twittering/facebooking a question. The concept being the first 10 or 20 people to socialling market the question would get a little spare change/reward for doing so.

we're discussing this project right now internally.... we're open for feedback.
