Name some bands that you listen to and swear no one else has ever heard of.

Mountain Goats (apocalyptic folk music)
Radical Face (shanty music)
Aesop Rock (hip-hop that didn't sell out)

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

It's basically impossible to find a band or music artist that no one else knows about. Just about everyone serious about their craft and with at least a little luck will have some form of following - no matter how large or small. If you're talking about artists unknown exclusively on the mass popularity scale, then it could account for 85% of bands in the history of pop music. A few artists I find myself quite lonely in listening to:

1. Lovesliescrushing (experimental ambient dream pop group consisting of one man, one woman and a wall of guitar effects)
2. Fantastic Plastic Machine (Japanese musician/producer who combines bossa nova with a house, trip-hop and a handful of other electronica genres)
3. Hans-Joachim Roedelius (German electronic musician, prominent in the 70s)
4. Bridgette St. John ('70s folk artist who utilizes touches of studio experimentation in her music)
5. The Polyphonic Size ('80s post-punk/ new wave group out of the Netherlands)

Whenever I write, I find that female folk music does the best for me. There is something about the sound of an accoustic guitar and a woman's voice that gets the creative juices flying. I have a lot of lesbian friends that find it funny that I have introduced them to more, "lesbian music," than their community has. Want to have an idea of the music that I listen to when I write?

The Indigo Girls
Ingrid Michaelson
Ani DiFranco

I would have also listed Liz Phair, Emilie Autumn, and Joni Mitchell, but the original post only had three refs, so that is what I stuck with.

JD. I will take a listen to your station. I have one of my own as well that is dominated by female folk music.

If you're looking for some classic female folk/folk rock, I'd say to check out Joni Mitchell, Bridgette St. John, Judy Collins and Nico (her solo stuff without The Velvet Underground).
