This could also be a made for TV movie. I seared all of imdb.com plot summaries and keywords. I can't freaking find this movie / tv show. My friend remembers it too, just can't remember the name.

Anyone else remember what I think was a short film from the late 1970s or early 1980s involving a child playing this game (under a different name, of course)? The game was actually a means of opening up a portal of some sort after beating the game. The film ended with the kid's father finding out about the true purpose of the game, but being too late to stop his son, so he starts playing the game so he can go wherever his son went. 67.135.49.198 (talk) 17:58, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

This person thinks it was a short film. I thought maybe it was a twilight zone episode. I did some digging and didn't come up with anything there... but I felt I might not have know enough to totally eliminate that possibility.
I honestly searched this question for several hours yesterday and even called my brother, my sister and my best friend.. they even asked their spouses, but they are younger than me and my brother... sorry I couldn't do any better.

M$I have also seen this movie and don't know what it's from. It was after 1983 definately probably 1985 to early 90's. (I was 3 in 83). The game was Simon but it was called something else. I saw it on tv. The vibe was very amazing stories-like. It might have been an hbo movie. Wonder if there is a listing ofthose somewhere.

"Trumpy is cool, especially when he does "magic things" like stand on the ceiling, make Tommy's laundry fly through the air, and turn an old Simon game into a slammin' beat box "

It's a TV movie. Kid walks through a portal at the end and his parents have to beat the Simon game. You really have to have seen it. I've searched a whole weekend on the Internet. No one typed it up on imdb.com or anything. You'll not be able to google it unless you know some serious search-fu skills. Sorry.
I did some serious searching for a while on this. Came up blank. It's a tough one, that's for sure.
I did some mega search-fuing and found nothing! Wow. I even searched through the library of Disney tv movies of the 80s (because it sounds so Disney!). Nothing. This is a tough one! Just so you know, there were people out there trying for you!
Good luck, and PLEASE report back if you figure it out!

M$Oh and I looked through the Amazing Stories links and some of them sound really close but I read some more and it's not in there. Maybe that other show you mentioned.
So far Tales of the Darkside, Twilight Zone (1985 series) and Amazing Stories are all really close. They deal with satanic word processors, mysterious alien cardboard boxes. The period is right. If I could just find some other similar shows. I wish TV.com had an API or a better power search (or any power search).
Best attempt yet. I need to find a sci-fi expert. And yes, it's a TV movie. There's the stranger on yahoo that's seen it and my friend who saw it in the 80s too. They were doing a back-to-back show he said so I think it was a made for tv movie.

in the '80s, there was also "tales from the darkside" and "the outer limits" was remade sometime around the early '90s... both in series format, and similar in vibe to the old twilight zone (except each episode was an hour long). maybe it was on one of those shows?
I looked over the Twilight Zone episode summaries and didn't find one that sounds like this. Great minds think alike!
