Name 5 inventions which has meant a lot to the world.
Explain your choice.

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

1. Farming
Once people stopped being hunter-gatherers, and wound up growing their food in one place, this allowed centralized populated areas to develop, which changed the course of history (and actually, even allowed history to happen). If people still had to scrounge for food they would not be able to specialize or have enough stability to live the lives most of us do today.

2. Beer and Cheese (food and cooking)
I am only sort of joking here. The first time that people actually put ingredients together, not because they had to to live, but because they tasted good, marks a huge turning point in the world. It meant there was enough leisure time and stability for people to experiment with nutrition and food, and tap into their creativity. Food is the true mark of when civilization begins.

3.The Steam Engine
One of the first complex machines, the Steam Engine allowed people to harness the forces of nature in a very powerful way. It allowed trains to be built to transport people large distances, and factories to be made that could create lots of items quickly, cheaply and in bulk.

4. Electricity
Yes, electricity is part of the known universe, but what I refer to here is the harnessing of electricity, for use in lights and to power our lives. Without electricity, sure we'd still probably have many of our gadgets, but probably not as cheaply as we do today, and not a lot of the kitchen or household smaller appliances. No washing machines. No food processors. No electric thermostats or air conditioners.

5. Television/Telephone/Internet
I am putting all of these together as one, because they are very similar technologies - a way to broadcast and communicate quickly across long distances by using electricity. And, in each generation that they were developed, the technologies provided radical changes to society. From the Hindenburg tragedy to Wars, deaths, births, and the creation of celebrity culture and YouTube, these techologies have radically changed our leisure time, the way we do business, and the way we consume media.
