The only dangerous thing about them is how they are applied, or even the prep before they are applied, due you the top layer of nail being shaved off weakens the whole nail a huge amount. this is as the outer layer is the strongest the rest is quite brittle.

Are acrylic nails really that bad?
I know they can cause fungus issues and layers of nails can be lost...but what else?
I've gotten them for 6 years and never had a problem....should I expect one some day if I continue?

You should be fine, most people who have problems are usually allergic, and for them I would switch to gels which is a similar product. I would say if you haven't had problems yet I wouldn't worry about it, talk to your manicurist next time your in if you are still worried.
