My Xbox 360 just red-ringed. Can I just buy an Xbox 360 Arcade and stick my hard-drive in?

Tip for best answer: M$3.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The arcade is meant to be able to have the hard drive upgraded - so it should work. But I'd like to point out that the RROD warranty should be 3 years, so double check. I was slightly confused last time mine died because the normal warranty was expired, but once I got to the part of their site that you select the problem, it showed a cost of $0 and said the RROD warranty was three years. If that's expired, I'd check to see how much it costs out of warranty - you might save some money.

The reason I don't have a warranty is because this system was bought secondhand, well, thirdhand I guess - I got it from a guy who got it from another guy off Craigslist. Soooo yeah, nada on the warranty.

I just ordered an Arcade. I'm thinking it's worth it because the disc tray on the 360 was basically broken anyway, I had to jimmy it open with a paperclip every time I wanted to put in or take out a game. Very annoying, but shouldn't be a nuisance any longer.

Thanks for everyone's help.

This is true! Microsoft has extended the length of time they will fix the RROD on the Xbox in order to keep lawsuits to a minimum. Before you try anything else you should give them a call to see if they will cover it. If you have issues mention that you are going to talk about your experience on Mahalo, let them know that your customer service experience will be known by many others

The short answer is yes. You will just have to transfer all the licenses of the purchases you have made from XBLM to the new console. The info for the transfer is here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemuse/xbox360/licensemigration/

I would check first, by opening the Xbox and unplugging the HDD.

If it works, then you know the HDD is the problem. If it has the same error then the odds are in your favor.

But, you can't use an Arcade, they don't have internal hard drives.

Here's Mahalo's page on the problem:
How to Fix a Red Ring of Death

If you don't get what you need out of that, please try calling 1-800-4MY-XBOX for customer support, just grab a snack and be prepared to wait for a while.

No, I've had RRODs before, and I've done all the silly things to try to fix it. It's definitely broken.

I don't have a warranty for this system, so getting Microsoft repair is not an option.

What I'm asking is, can I buy an Arcade, take my Hard Drive from my broken 360 (and the HD is not borked), plug it into the Arcade, and be able to use that hard drive.
