My TIVO Basic died. Recommend an HD DVR that is not source specific and does not require a subscription.
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

"The DTVPal DVR shouldn't be an oddity in the electronics industry. This $250 box doesn't do anything that hasn't been possible since at least a decade ago.
It appears to be the only high-definition digital video recorder that provides the same kind of simple program-guide interface as a cable or satellite DVR and yet does not require a subscription or rental fee.
The DTVPal DVR includes two digital TV tuners, so you can watch one program while recording another, and a 250-gigabyte hard drive that Dish says can save "up to 150 hours" of standard-definition recording and "up to 30 hours" of high-def footage."

It is somewhat pricey ($500), but there are no subscription fees, and it does have a lot of nice features.

Thanks for the tip. During Thanksgiving, I bought Lenovo Ideacenter for a friend of mine for $360 (instant rebate and 10% bing cash back) and it works great for a media center pc/dvr. It comes with HDMI out, tv tuner, remote. the only thing to be upgraded later is the dvd drive to blueray.

I myself have a 3 year old dell system running win7 and spent $60 for tv tuner and remote. It works as a second TV and a DVR. and I can watch the recorded shows from anywhere in the house or over internet.
A decent system with Vista or Windows 7, with a dual or single tv tuner and a 80gig+ hdd. You can use the media center on Vista or W7 to record OTA HD broadcast or clear QAM from a cable or sat receiver.
