My spaniel puppy has recently started to bark at animals on TV. I love animal/wildlife programmes. Any tips?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

There are two methods of training that I have tried. One is to take a pop can and put pennies or rocks in it, tape the top shut and when it barks shake the can. It will startle it and eventually it will stop. I never had the heart to keep doing that after the first time. I was afraid it would make my puppy fearful. So, I usually resort to a spray bottle filled with tap water. When it barks, spray it. I also use this method to keep my cats away from my Christmas tree. :)

I'd suggest looking into clicker training which is a positive based training method. You would develop a reward based (click and treat) communication with your dog to let him/her know that when s/he is quiet that's good. Barking at the TV = nothing good. Animals learn faster and tend to generalize better (ie learn that keeping quiet when seeing other dogs everywhere brings good things) when you clicker train versus using punitive methods of training.

OR you can videotape it and send it into one of those funny video shows :p

...but the can shaking thing may help, too.

Put the dog in another room when you are watching those shows. I had a cat who used to watch us play video games and follow the characters on the screen.
