My son uses a Mac Mini, and has no Webcam. What is a good, moderately priced ($50-$150 prefer close to $50) that is compatible?

Tip for best answer: M$3.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I suggest the Eyeball. This webcam is capable of producing both high quality audio and high quality video. As long as your son is running Mac OSX 10.4.11 or higher, then it will be compatible. From the way it is designed, it can be used on almost any monitor, as seen from second photo. The price is 99.99 USD.

Well, I guess the problem is there is too few webcams for Mac Mini.

Different people use different web cameras as far as I know, on the PC and on Mac.

There are actually few cameras that are moderately priced starting from $50.

Now, with little research I've tried to find the best.

And this is the one I found the best:
Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro for Mac
Here's the Amazon link:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AOK7KI?ie=UTF8&tag=williamjman-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B001AOK7KI

From what I've seen the reviews on this web camera are VERY, VERY good (even this website: http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/ gives it a best review.)

The price is up to $100 but if you take a look at the features you'll really be blown away.

I hope I have helped you and saved you some time researching. The choice for Mac-compatible web cameras isn't as big as for the PC ones but there are some quality products on the market.

Just one piece of advice when searching ;)

1) Believe at least the official product pages (they are usually full with hype)
2) Forums these days are most credible sources before blogs and review sites.

It may be common sense but I've seen lots of people that don't use this advice.

Have a great day.

Any Mac running OSX 10.4.11 Tiger and 10.5 Leopard is UVC Compliant.

UVC means USB Video Class. So any UVC based webcam will simply just work when plugged in the USB 2.0 port.

If you find the webcam sold by Logitech is tad bit expensive. The Mac Mini is convenient enough to bring along on any PC store. You can test any webcams and check if any of those "Windows PC only" labeled webcam is UVC compliant. I bet you can find a deal thats cheaper than $50 this way.

The Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro is designed specifically for Mac. It offers hi-def video, 2 megapixel sensor, built-in mic, and super easy plug-and-play installation. It retails for $193, but Amazon has them for $101.49, at the moment, with free shipping.

Andy,

You're going to want the Logitech QuickCam® Pro 9000. It comes in right in between your budget at $99.99 (suggested retail, but hunt for deals). I can't say enough great things about this camera. I bought two--one for my mom and one for me. It blows the built-in iSight camera on my iMac away. Super high quality video with its high resolution camera. What's more, though, is the optics, from Carl Zeiss®, the global leader in camera optics.

What really makes this camera shine apart from the great optics is that it has great light balancing and audio tweaks for its built-in microphone, like echo cancellation and background noise suppression.

I can't recommend it highly enough. Oh, and one more thing. It's designed to sit on any style of monitor--CRT or flat panel. Even one as thin as a laptop.

Here's a link to the deals. Looks like you can easily find one for as low as $67.99 on eBay.
