My son came home with lice. Should I treat the whole family with lice shampoo even if I do not see them on everyone's head?

We have never had a bout of lice before. My son came home itching his head like crazy and low and behold he has lice. I have heard how contagious lice is. I see lice on his head and my daughter. Should I also treat the rest of us that I do not see lice on, just to be safe?

This particular question I feel the need to answer with my own personal thoughts and experience.

My husbands family moved in with us many years ago from California and brought lice. At the time, there were 10 of us living in our house. When I discovered the lice problem I went out and bought several bottles of lice shampoo. I made each and every person in the house use the treatment to be sure we got rid of the lice completely. Since the neices had the lice so bad, we even bug bombed the house.

We did get rid of the lice the first time around. As long as everyone in the house is healthy, not pregnant, or not too young, I say do everyone's head. Lice can be hard to see and you would hate for someone else to have it but you missed it. You will end up having to go through this all over again. I know how time consuming it is to clean the hole house perfectly to get rid of lice. Not to mention, it was kind of gross to me. I just wanted the lice gone immediately.
