My PS3 won't turn on by pressing the PS button on a controller, any idea why?
The controllers work wirelessly once the console is on.

is there an option to turn this feature on off in the system? or any other ideas for why this may be?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

It's because they're not "synced" to your PS3.

You're likely using an external charger.

Plug in your controller to your PS3. Let it charge for a couple of minutes. Remove the USB cable. Press the PS button.

If your PS3 turns on... everything is operating as Sony designed it.

If your PS3 doesn't turn on, there is something else going on that I don't know the answer to.

As I said the controllers work once the console is on (therefore registered to the system) so it is very strange that it won't turn on the console. I am far from a newbie on ps3 problems, and wouldn't be posting if I wasn't well and truly stumped (though I could just be overlooking something relatively simple)

Did you try what I mentioned?

I use an external charger for my controllers. If they loose their charge or if the PS3 is turned off, I need to plug the controllers into the PS3, turn them on and then unplug them.

This seems to register the controllers with the PS3.
