My husband has sleep terrors. We have taken him to the doctor and when we tell them what happens they think we are crazy.

He wakes up fighting, yelling and punching holes in the wall. He broke a window pane, cut the middle of his foot, had to get stitches, can't remember a thing. He has being dealing with this for about ten years and he is tired of it. What can we do? The only thing that has been keeping him here is my prayers and the Lord and strength.

Unfortunately, our site is not directly affiliated with Dr. Schenck. If you would like to get in touch with the doctor, you can write to him at his office at 1405 Lilac Drive North, Minneapolis, MN 55422.

Though advice you get on Mahalo Answers may be helpful, you should always get professional medical advice from a doctor before starting any alternative health plan.

I would strongly suggest that you go to a sleep specialist and a medical doctor who deals with sleep issues. It could very likely be a medical, and not a psychological, issue.

No patient should ever be told they are crazy. I know this is hard, especially since you have been dealing with it so long, but a doctor-patient relationship is just that, a relationship. Even though the doctor has a lot of information, it's a two-way street, not a one-sided thing. If a doctor is telling you you're crazy, then find another doctor, and don't look back.

Has he ever thought of going to a sleep clinic?

My dad used to do this. It got worse with stress. He would see supervillians or giant insects or monsters and think he had to defend against them.

He had to be on medication for awhile, and see a psychiatrist. Turns out it was linked to a head injury. It took him close to 10 years to get over it, although he improved greatly within a couple of weeks of starting medication.

What exactly do you mean they think he is 'crazy'? I see that Dr. Schenck is a psychiatrist, maybe he simply feels that there are mental issues that your husband may have that are contributing to night terrors. He may feel that through your husband getting psychiatric treatment combined with an antidepressant or anti-anxiety drug may help to reduce or prevent episodes of night terrors.

But saying that they think he is crazy is a bit vague.
