My husband, Duffy 43yo, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes about 8 years ago. I'm finding that there really is no way to control blood suga

r externally. He averages 6-8 hospital trips a year, has a j-tube for feeding, severe gastro-paresis with ulcers, is in constant muscle/ joint pain, and extremely fatigued. Other than testing his blood sugar every 30-60 minutes around the clock, (and that would hurt!), what else can we do? Also my step-daughter, (Duff's natural daughter), is pregnant with her first child, and I was wondering about gestational diabetes, and if she is likely to get it? Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Since I am a type 2 diabetic, I can understand your worry about both your husband and step-daughter. I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with my son 27 years ago, but as soon as I had the baby I was fine. I then was diagnosed with diabetes type 2 about eight years ago. My mother and two of my grandparents were diabetics and it does run in the family so no doubt your step-daughter will someday be diagnosed with it. Since she is pregnant, I’m sure her obstetrician will take great care of her to make sure that her blood sugar stays in line while she is pregnant.

Usually type 1 diabetics are diagnosed as children not as adults. In individuals with type 1 diabetes, their bodies do not produce any insulin at all so they have no capability to convert sugar, starches etc. into energy like healthy people. The best thing for your husband is for him to try to do what his doctors suggest to try to control his diabetes. He might not be able to control it completely, but the closer he gets to controlling it, the better he will feel.

Hi @leene805!

Gestational diabetes is a condition in which women not previously diagnosed diabetes exhibit high blood glucose levels during pregnancy. This condition affects 3-10% of pregnancies and may vary according to the population being studied.

Since your step-daughter's father is suffering from diabetes, she also is likely to inherit it so the best way to prevent it is to see her doctor regularly and she should follow religiously the medical advice given to her.

Actually for your husband, I have a friend who also has type 1 diabetes. Now, he is the one who is injecting insulin for him and I think he has been doing it for several years. So one day, I recommended him a product that was told by other diabetic patients to be effective for them and he like the product. I also had tried this I think 6 bottles but stopped it because it's just expensive for me. I plan on taking it again because I loved it and it was effective for me. I think you should try it yourself first. It is good for cleansing and repairing damaged cells and I noticed it in myself when I was taking it before. It really strengthens one's immune system, too. You just have to follow the instruction religiously to see the effects. Check the product here: http://www.lifestyles.net/index.html

While most people with Type 1 diabetes are diagnosed as children or teens, it is not unheard of for someone to be diagnosed at an older age. But the disease is the same and requires a massive change in thinking to avoid those hospital trips. The first step is to learn all you (and he) can about diabetes. As you can see from some of the other answers, there are all sorts of fake cures and treatments out there. A type 1 diabetic must have care from an endocrinologist and regular tests to determine the A1c. Using an insulin pump instead of injections means better control for many people. There is also a CGM - continuous glucose monitor - that would allow you to see what the blood sugar is doing all the time - without testing every 30-60 minutes. Worth investigating! To get the right basal rate of insulin and insulin to carb ratio it helps to eat the same thing every day at the same time (just while you are figuring things out), then adding foods gradually.
There is a tendency for diabetes to run in families and your stepdaughter is more likely to get gestational diabetes.

Gestational Diabetes is the same as Type 1 Diabetes, wherein patients experience high levels of blood sugar, however this type of diabetes on pregnant women does not show any signs or indication that she maybe suffering from it. In this case, my advice for you as far as your step daughter is concerned, is to let her undergo blood glucose checks during the duration of her pregnancy.

With regards to your husband, who has a Type 1 diabetes, there have been new breakthroughs on drugs for this kind of diabetes, which is has been discovered on a type of enzyme that manages the lipids of patients suffering from diabetes. According to research by Bruce Hammock from the University of California, this drug has the capability to eliminate joint pain on patients.

Accordingly, "an inhaled powder could eliminate insulin injections for type 1 and type 2 diabetics. Taken with food, the insulin Afrezza is absorbed through the lungs and it controls the boost in blood sugar levels diabetics’ deal with following a meal. The particles immediately dissolve upon contact with the lung surface, releasing insulin monomers that rapidly enter the bloodstream."
