You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

One positive I can think of--it beats having your partner messing around on the side and finding out later--at least it's up front and on the table.
The biggest negatives? You are confronting basic human/animal instincts re territoriality, jealousy and protecting one's mate, along with increased risks of STD's--kind of like dating in high school or college ;o/

Is it permissible to your family members? Who knows? My guess is that if you have minor children many people would not approve of an open marriage.
Is it permissible to the public at large? Probably not to a majority of them, but do you care? Other than tut-tutting there is not much else they can do.

I guess I left out that two of the Ten Commandments are about this topic, and adultery by itself can be a bucketful of bad karma, but whether you follow fundamental views or more liberal ones--that's freedom, you don't get stoned by a mob like in some countries.
Some states might have some bizarre old laws though, like tar & feathering, or just basic fines.
Thank God no more burning at the stake for heresy.
