My Granddaughter did not hear Michael Jackson was black until he died and they talked about it on TV. So, was he black when he died?

"Black" is an ancestry, not a skin color. However his skin became so light, no one could change Michael Jackson's ancestry. It's that simple.

You know, that vitiligo made him varigated, the bleaching agent made the rest of his skin white, but that is not what I meant.

I meant was he still "a person of color"?? or had he moved into a different category? Can a person move across racial boundaries they way we can move across gender boundaries?

No. "Black" is an adjective used to describe the color of people or things. It "black" is used to describe Michael Jackson's later years, it completely loses its meaning. I understand that the adjective "black" has already been modified to describe people who are actually different shades of brown, but that evolved into the English language without completely ruining the meaning of the word.

So was he a black man or a white man when he died? My Granddaughter thought he was a white guy who was trying to look like a woman. She is 13 and never knew he was an "African American" when he started out.
