My friend wants to leave his job to pursue his band. What advice should I give him?

He is pretty talented, but I'm not sure he can support himself.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I think it's best not to give advice. The choice is his. If you are concerned, try to hear what he is saying and figure out why it bothers you. Observe without judgment what your friend is doing. When you talk to him, if you want to open a real dialogue refrain from 1) Story telling - ie "that reminds me of the time I quit my job. . .
2) On Upmanship
3) Education - ie "If you just did it this way. . ."
4) Consoling
5) Shutting him down - ie "what a silly idea"
6) Interrogating - ie "why are you doing this?
In short, to be the Good Friend, don't just do something STAND THERE.

Say to him... "Whatever makes you happy man and think its the best for you...Life it to short to do what ya hate...ya know?"

You can always go back to the desk work....Im pretty sure your friend will be happy doing what makes him happy, but also becoming creative to also make a way of living in society..otherwise move away and build your own sustainable house..thats what im gunna do..

I agree with Ms Muffin (again!): Stay out of it!

Stories which pivot on anyone giving advice to a friend on a crucial decision in the friend's life usually have sad if not tragic endings. No matter what advice you give, if it doesn't work out the way you said, then you will become your friend's scapegoat and be blamed for everything bad that ever happened.

When your friends ask you for advice, just smile and say something like, "I don't know! What do you want to do?" Those stories usually are comedies that end well, with the friend making up his or her own mind and saying, "Wow! You give great advice!" In short, your only advice should be, "Do whatever you think is best."

It’s a tough time in the economy giving up a solid job. If you are close enough friends to offer advice and not have it come between the two of you, you might ask him if he has considered the budget impact? If the band has not been at least a partial source of income to date, expecting it to be the total income may be a reach. He also needs to remember without an employer taking out his taxes and social security contributions he has to cover those himself. Being self employed may seem like a dream but it comes with a lot of stresses. I would recommend he contact the Small Business Administration in the area and see if they have classes or a counselor who could help him understand all the legalities he needs to know before doing this. Good luck to your friend in what ever choice he makes

While it may be everyone’s fantasy to one day quit their job to pursue their life’s passion, there is a lot to consider in making such a choice. First, ask your friend if he has any sort of plan. Is he quitting his job and winging it, or is he prepared? Another key question you want to focus on is what sort of professional relationships or deals has he made that would suggest that quitting his job would be a wise decision at this stage? If he has a contract or some sort of development deal in the works, tell him to go for it! But if he is just hoping to get discovered playing gigs at local venues, you might want to encourage him to keep his job.

It may seem harsh at first, but once he realizes that he cannot support himself unless his music career begins to take off, he will appreciate your encouraging him to stay with the job. I have two friends who are musicians, one has released an album on a local label, and the other works independently, and neither of them has been able to afford quitting their job yet. Good luck to him in his musical endeavors, I hope things work out!
