about Understanding Basic Crochet Abbreviations
My crochet pattern uses an FDC abbreviation. What does that mean?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

FDC stands for "Foundationless Double Crochet". It's the process of making each individual double crochet and the next few chains as you go. In this way, you don't have to concern yourself with a starter chain that becomes too tight as you move along it. Basically, if you start your crochet pattern off using FDC instead of the common foundation chain, you may find that you work faster. The final result tends to have an edge that isn't too tight with puckers.
Coats and Clarks describes the technique as follows:
---quote---
step 1: Ch 3 (counts as first Fdc), yo, insert hook in 3rd ch from hook, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through one loop on hook (base-ch made), (yo and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice (Fdc made)
step 2: Yo, insert hook in base-ch of last Fdc made, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through one loop on hook (base-ch made), (yo and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice (Fdc made). Rep step 2 for desired number of Fdc.

Mahalo has two helpful pages on the subject in general: the How to Crochet and Understanding Basic Crochet Abbreviations pages.
