My cat ran away, do you think he'll come back?

I am so sad. My cat is about 3 1/2 years old, he's fixed and he's an indoor/outdoor cat... He's pretty independent, but he also loves coming home to cuddle and hang out around the house too.

Tuesday I saw him playing in the field across from our house, but that's the last time I saw him. We live in a suburb but there is a vacant field across from us. No animals wild animals that I know of, that would harm him... There aren't any signs that he's been hit by a car, and I've never in the time I've lived here seen any animal control trucks, so I doubt he got picked up. There are also a few other cats in the neighborhood that he likes to play with, I guess they are all friends.

Do male cats just take themselves on little journeys and come back later? I'm worried and sad. I hope he comes home soon.

I was wondering if this was a house cat that got out? I think he will come back, it's that time of year and males seem to go on the prowl. Animals have good homeing instincts provided they don't get picked up or wander to far. I would give him a few days, in the meantime check your local shelters to be sure he has'nt gotten busted roaming the neighborhood. Some people don't tollerate cats especially if they are spraying or getting into their garbage.
If he is chipped they will check for that at the shelter, or has tags, and call you. Also contact the vets in your area incase someone brings him in, and you can hang a picture of him there to. Otherwise it's a waiting game.
I wish you the best and hop he has a safe return.

I have gone through this before, and he may well come home. You could try checking with neighbors, if they know he is missing they may be able to give you a call when they see him so maybe you can catch him. I've had a kitty run away like that, but it wasn't a happy ending. I've also known others that the cat was gone for a week, but then showed up just fine begging for some food and attention.

good luck!

I know it's hard, but don't give up... yet.
I hope that our cat stories can give you hope.

I had a male fixed cat when I was younger. He was a player.
He would sometimes stay out all night.
On one occasion, he didn't come back for 2 weeks. I cried, I mourned.
I thought he was gone.
Turned out he was just hanging out with his friends a few blocks away and getting fed by their owner.

Don't throw in the towel... yet.

Ha! You are so right about looking everywhere, as I was reminded of this a couple days ago. My last cat was missing for a few days and I found him in my closet! I have no idea how long he was hiding there, eeek! :)

Don't worry cats especially male do that every time after all its mating season . I have a cat who is 7 yrs and he is also missing; I don't worry at all for i know that he will return after the season is over . You should be expecting him by September or October.

e may come back, cats usually do. And yes cats like to take littlejourneys and then come hom, that mostly happens with "non-fixed"cats. I had one that returned home after almost six months. Anyway my advise is do not just sit and wait for him to come back, many things can happen to him.Do not take chances,go find him. I have three of them and they are indoors for their own safety and my peace of mind.

We've been looking all over for him, and I've put food out in case he comes home while we are gone. I'm reluctant to call the pound or the local vets yet, because he's only been missing since Tuesday, and we live on a private lane with a few other houses who also have outdoor cats. They all kind of play together in the field where we live, so it doesn't seem to me that someone would have called the pound to come get him.

And my husband went around looking for signs that he might have been injured or worse, but there's no trace of anything.

Hopefully he's just out having fun someplace, but I'm worried. It's not unusual for him to be gone over night, especially in the summer months... but it is unusual for him to be gone this long.
