an engine needs three things to keep it running.
1. Fuel (gas or diesel depending)
2. Air
3. Spark

It sounds like your not getting a good fuel / air balance when you give it gas. Check your fuel filter and air filter for the cheapest fix.

You might have a fouled carburetor or fuel injector. I think it was 89 when Dodge only offered fuel-injectors. You could clean these, or replace them.

A good mechanic could diagnose the problem with more information and being able to hear it, but they will want something for their time.

Change the fuel filter and the spark plugs. If that doesn't work, post again and we'll be able to troubleshoot it better.

I am no mechanic but i have my share of owning aging cars.
I had a few experience with similar symptoms with a few of my cars.
By any chance did you switch your grade gasoline or bought petrol from a different service station lately?. If you did any of the things I mention before
Your car could be suffering from a case of "bad gas" meaning you probable buy gasoline containing water. This general happens with the lower grade petrol or at a non chain service station.
If this is the case, the most economical way to solve your problem. Is for you to go to one of the popular auto store or service station in your area and ask for a bottle of DRY GAS (usally cost around a buck and change).Pour the whole content of the bottle in your tank( I would also recommended that you filled you tank with the highest grade gasoline from a reputable service station).Get on the free way and drive at the speed limit for about 10 miles. That should burn off the excess water in the petrol in your tank of your car.
Good luck.
