My boss drops into my office to "chat', which distracts me from my work. I often have to stay late to make up the time.

How can I talk to her about this without her feeling that I'm criticizing her?
Tip for best answer: M$3.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I would politely tell your boss that you cannot get your work done when he does this and let him know the situation it puts you in by causing you too stay late to catch up, he will understand

I wouldn't stay late if I were you. If you were taking personal calls or playing games during work hours then making up the time would be the honest thing to do, but talking with your boss should still count toward work time. Your boss knows you can't do other work while she's talking to you, so if she spends half the day talking to you and you get half as much done then it's not your fault.
Stop working when work normally ends, and if your boss tries to start a conversation just say "I'm sorry, I really need to finish this right now. Can we talk later?" That will show her that you are working hard and are not looking for an excuse to waste time, and it will prompt her to consider whether what she was going to say is actually worth coming back for later. Probably if she was just chatting to fill up time it won't be important enough to tell you about another time.

It is better to tell her directly even though it seems criticizing.

No noh. Don't tell you boss any speech with angry.

A polite request can avoid many really disgusting and unwanted matter.
So I think you should tell him politely about your problem.

I am not making it specific that what should you tell.Because I don't know about your boss or you and also not clear about your situation in work place. So I think please prepare yourself tonight that what will tell him tomorrow. But please tell about your original cause with polite.

Politeness is a great virtue, we can realize it's necessity if we look at "Kanye West".So not be another "Kanye" by rude behave.
I think if your boss is a gentle man/woman he will realize your situation.
