You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I apologize for the confusion and we will let you know when the Mahalo dollars are accurately returned to your account.

M$2. I'm not sure why they are showing up as negative, but I'm guessing the person requested a refund. You should be able to leave feedback if you protest the refund. The fact that it was rewarded after a best answer was selected is why this is not showing up (and I'm sure Mahalo will be changing that soon).
I try to view tip answers on a per hour ratio. Imagine you make $10 an hour--low but above minimum wage. If someone asks you a $1 question, it should take you about 6 minutes to answer it. If someone asks you a $5 question, it should take you about 30 minutes to answer it. Using this as a judge, would you still feel that the answers were worth the money offered?
Mahalo is going to error on the side of the people offering the money at this point because it makes the most sense. They are risking the most and need to be happy. More satisfied = more tipped questions. Are some going to abuse this system? Yes, I've seen it already. That's why it is important to review questions you have answered to see if the tip was revoked so you can leave comments.

M$The number of rescinded tips will soon show up on the members next question in RED.
So, imagine in red "This user has rescinded three tips in five questions (60%)."
If you see that you might not want to waste your time with that user.
If you see: "This user has rescinded three tips in one hundred questions (3%)." you might want to answer their question.
If one user has 3 rescinded tips consecutively, this should appear on his question, like a friendly warning or so: "this user is not so easy to please".

M$Doesn't make sense that an asker could make people pay to answer them.
It would be more helpful if we knew the timeline. I'm guessing they both went down like this:
1) asker asked a question and offered a tip
2) you answered
3) asker gave feedback "that';s not online, that's off topic" whatever
4) asker didn't pick a best answer
5) voters picked yours as best answer
6) mahalo awarded you the tip
7) asker said "wait, there was no good answer, i want my tip back"
8) mahalo revered the award
under the current rules, the site seems to favor askers by default. i would suggest a change that involved inspection of the answers by a human before tip money is refunded.
