My 14 yr old wants to start a podcast but I don't want to buy a 'good' mic til I am sure he'll stick to it. What mic should I get?

Tip for best answer: M$3.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I'm acutally 14 and I did the same thing. After about 15 weekly episodes I bought the Samson COU1. http://www.samsontech.com/products/productpage.cfm?prodID=1810

Which is USB so you don't need a mixer.

I went and purchased this Headset and it has worked very well for me.

I think this version is no longer on the shelf, but its replacement is the same price and is very good.

As someone who has personally done a lot of podcasting, here are a few points:

a) 'good' microphones are pretty cheap these days (relative to what they used to cost) -- $100 gets you pretty high quality - studio, in fact

b) when I was young, my parents gave me a somewhat crappy acoustic guitar to learn on. The fretboard was warped and it was MUCH harder to play than a normal guitar, and as I result, I did not progress very fast and was discouraged.

Years later, when I played a decent-quality guitar, I was amazed at how much easier it was and how fast I then progressed. I was like, 'I could have been playing this easily all these years?!? If I'd had a decent guitar back in the beginning, I would have been light years ahead of where I am now.' (No ding on my parents; they did not understand this :) )

But the moral of the story: crappy equipment for these sorts of things is highly discouraging to a young'un. It has to be at least decent. I'd suggest 'rolling the dice' on your 14 yr old's interest and get equipment that is good.

By the way, I would select this as best answer but because I asked for a specific recommendation I can't. I did send a tip your way though :)

Going with that idea, what would be a good, sub $100 mic? I'm ok even a touch over $100, but not much as with everyone, Money's tight, lol

Blue snowball mic. http://bluemic.com be careful of the serial number and vista if he uses it. It is just < $100 and worth it! We use about 4 -5 of them for various reasons. You can find them for $79 locally or online.

I would suggest any microphone around the price of 25-30$.
I got a pretty good one at Wal-mart, until I accidentally ran over it with my chair.

A very good microphone I have seen used was my friends and it was only 35$.(Plantronics DSP-400 USB Headset) But I'm sure a Logitech one will easily do the job as long as it has noice reduction and a few other features fo clearity.

A USB Headset mic is the best option. Logitech and Plantronics make some quite good ones without being horribly expensive.
A headset mic is a great starting mic because it stays in a constant position in front of your mouth and is integrated into the headphones which you will be wearing anyway.

I use this GN Netcom Headset for podcasting and when I am on Skype. It works VERY well! Your son would have no problem podcasting with it.
