why is simon cowell mean on american idol?

simon is mean on american idol but kind on britan's got taltent!!!! :o gasp!!

It has always been my philosophy that everything on TV is done to drive the ratings. Whether it is Simon being mean or Paula being, well, kind of a train wreck, everything the producers put on TV is meant to get the ratings up.

Personally, I think it's a little annoying that he's mean to so many people, but a lot of people find it funny and truthful. But the fact that he says these things bring people back to watch the show often.
