I searched for this but couldn't find a reference to Eric Clapton himself answering the question, but having been a performer in the past, I have a guess.
A rug might help to dampen some of the reflective sound so that a performer, especially one that might have developed some hearing loss in certain frequencies from years of performing, might be able to monitor those sounds that are most important to him.
Or it could just be cozier. :)
