It was a basic case of Les Paul being completely devoted to his art, and not devoting much time to his family or wife. Mary was tired of touring and the grind of the music biz. Les Paul was fanatic about his work. Reportedly their split was pretty animated and unfriendly.
But as for more details? Not much information is known since the divorce was back in 1964 when polite society really didn't discuss such things.

In the late 1960s, Paul went into semi-retirement, although he did return to the studio occasionally. He and Mary Ford (born Iris Colleen Summers) had divorced in December 1964, as she could no longer countenance the itinerant lifestyle their act required of them
