The Crests recorded the classic Oldie in 1958, and it climbed to the Billboard #2 rank at its peak.

The Stray Cats recorded a cover of the original song to be used for the 1984 soundtrack of the John Hughes movie, "Sixteen Candles". But it was a very different version that only vaguely resembled The Crests' original.
Source(s):
Personal knowledge, love of John Hughes and music, parents obsessed with Oldies. I'm a nut what can I say.

Wait - I did have to look up the year for the song: Wikipedia

So edited. Sometimes, when you just know a lot of crap your own noggin is the greatest source of all!

Should we *cite* our personal roots of expertise? That could get to be a looooong list!

@gno.... sometimes I like to mention not the source for how I really know something but either a link that corroborates what I said, or a "Further Reading" link or two where people can learn more.

You're right that ironically it's on areas of your greatest expertise that you can't really cite sources because you've learned so much over so many years you can't easily say how you know what you know or where the info first came from.

Johnny Maestro & The Crest, a NY based R&B group, sang this song in 1958. Sixteen candles went all the way to the No. 2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart more than fifty years ago.

Sixteen Candles
~ The Crests

Happy birthday, happy birthday, baby
Oh, I love you so

Sixteen candles make a lovely light
But not as bright as your eyes tonight
(as your eyes tonight) (Oh)
Blow out the candles, make your wish come true
For I'll be wishing that you love me, too
(that you love me, too)

You're only sixteen (sixteen)
But you're my teenage queen (you're my queen)
You're the prettiest, loveliest girl I've ever seen
(I've ever seen) (OH!)

Sixteen candles in my heart will glow
For ever and ever for I love you so (for I love you so)

You're only sixteen (sixteen)
But you're my teenage queen (you're my queen)
Oh, you're the prettiest, loveliest girl I've ever seen
(I've ever seen) (OH!)

Sixteen candles in my heart will glow
For ever and ever for I love you so
(for I love you so)
For I love you so!!!
