I'm not sure if she's the best female drummer ever, but she hasn't been brought up yet, so here's a few videos of Cindy Blackman - Lenny Kravitz's drummer.

Asker's Rating:
• I love Sheila E, but I've got to admit that Cindy Blackman is smokin'. The girl has serious chops and from what I'm reading has played with some very good players. I wanted to find a new role model and I found her. Thanks for sharing a very worthy drummer with me. Cindy's my new #1!!

I love her playing... she kicks. It's great to see a sister cut loose. Thanks for the help.

I didn't know Chaka played drums... Wow! It looks like her hands are a little more like a percussionist, but she lays down some sweet grooves.

I have always loved the rhythm section of the Magic Numbers. Michele Stodart is the drummer.

Though, to be honest, I'm not sure I find women drummers that much different from their male counterparts. Is there much to tell them apart?

Sheila E is really good. Check out the middle of this video. I've also seen Terri Lynne Carrington a few times and she is funky.

First of all, using fame and recognition to indicate "best" is pretty stupid. Lots of famous bands are surprisingly bad. In any case, I have two favorite female drummers: Carla Azar from Ednaswap (and now Autolux) and Caroline Rue who left Hole in 1992. I like Caroline's work more, but I think that Carla is the better drummer. She's very versatile and very, very capable. Here's a clip from one of Ednaswap's songs. You can see she's a very good drummer:

Carla rocks. Definitely a contender with Sheila E. and Cindy Blackman. I'll have to think really hard on this one. Thanks!
