Where is rap-rock music heading? Can you give me some bands to listen to or some ideas for a cool sound?

I am trying to produce music for a guy who has a great look - he is really tall, ex-military, and pumped, and only 25. He is really good at rapping and can sing a bit. He fronts a successful hip hop band, but he wants to do "harder" music since he doesn't think he can compete as a white rapper, and he really loves bands like Rage Against the Machine. Is there commercially successful music these days that has a rap - rock sound? I am used to producing hip hop music, so I can definitely add these types of elements. I just figured the angst-ridden "rapcore" sound is spent, unless I am wrong.

If you're more experienced with the hip hop side of things, but looking to move into rock, I'd take a look at Lil Wayne's soon-to-be-released album, Rebirth. It is supposedly his "rock album", and may very well be a big influence on where that genre is headed. Check out the singles "Prom Queen" and "Hot Revolver" for an idea of the sound. Aside from that, I can't think of too much in terms of a rap/rock hybrid that isn't the played-out "rapcore" sound.

Also, I'm a tall, 21 year old aspiring white rapper with more of a singing background than a rap background, but I am very much influenced by rap. You know, in case you're looking for another act...

Well I personally really like rap-rock (or nu-metal) music and there's many popular bands that could be included in this genre:
- Linkin Park
- Red Hot Chilli Peppers
- Rage Against the Machine (which you already mentioned)
- Limp Biskit
- Hollywood Undead
- Korn
- Beastie Boys
Hope you find this helpful!

Rap-Rock is definitely not as popular as it was on the late 90's but there are still some bands doing it today.

My favorites from back in the day are 311 and Linkin Park.

I can't think of too many new rap rock groups. A couple that come to mind would be Flobots and Matisyahu.
