You can watch various video content through sites like http://www.hulu.tv, including some movies, but I don't believe these are downloadable.

There are also sites that give you a free trial. I know if you download the most recent version of winamp, they can also offer you a free trial of a membership to some mp3 downloading site. I don't remember which because it's been a week since I downloaded it and I didn't take the offer, but that's another option.

The Red Ferret is a good place to start, as is Largehearted Boy.
You might also want to check out the link to download squad below which recommends 35 places to get free and legal mp3s.
I should also mention The Hype Machine, a huge and massively popular site which aggregates songs from a gazillion mp3 and music blogs. You can play songs on the hypem site or go to the listed blogs to download them. Do bear in mind that many of the mp3s you can find on The Hype Machine are not posted with permission of the artists.

You don't mean things like limewire, right? If not, then the first place I suggest going to the artists' websites and myspace pages. Frequently they share a song or two, and underground artists frequently share even more than that. There are also sites that give you a free trial. I know if you download the most recent version of winamp, they can also offer you a free trial of a membership to some mp3 downloading site. I don't remember which because it's been a week since I downloaded it and I didn't take the offer, but that's another option.
