That's a google search for "RIAA sues".
There is NO "safe" place to download free music. If you want it, pay for it. Seriously. The RIAA is a bunch of cutthroat dinosaurs, true, but stealing music is still illegal.
Many sites purporting to be "free" are actually put up by the RIAA to entrap you. Don't be stupid.

Since your question doesn't specify legal or not I would answer that the only ones I know of are certainly in the "grey area", but nonetheless. Bearshare, Limewire, and I think almost every Bit Torrent site will get you downloading music for free. Bearshare has a trial version of its software out there, and the music seems to be labelled well (you get the songs you're after) Limewire has always been my first choice but you get alot of spam and mislabled songs. Recently I started searching through btjunkie.org and found a vast variety of tunes and so on, it works (for me) in conjunction with Limewire and you can download entire albums and sometimes even whole collections with a click or two. As far as "safe" goes, I'm not quite sure what you mean, but be careful choosing what you download and have a good antivirus program running and you should be fine. Hope this helps.

That is simply not true. There are legally free services that are supported by ads, yet bound by DRM.

Yes, but he specified "download". I can't think of any sites that allow you to "download" music for free. Stream over the web, yes. Download, not so much.

There's no place to download a lot of music free, unless you're talking about Myspace Music (or independent sites sponsored by Radiohead, etc) where certain bands allow for free downloads.
I think the question is alluding to illegal downloading, and I agree that there is no "safe" place to illegally download music (this includes viruses).
