"The Village Green Preservation Society." My favorite Kinks album and song. It's just so damn British...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syqQdfWO6KY
I would have been tempted to go with "Picture Book," but ever since it was used in that crappy commercial (I think it was for HP), I just don't like it as much...Hearing the hook too many times in a short period of time just kind of killed it.
I also like this song's ambiguity. Are they mocking small-town life, or celebrating it? Both?

I like heavy music (Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, whatever you want to call it)
And there are a few songs that started me on that path.
This is one of them.
I know this song wouldn't be considered "Hard Rock" by most people,
but the part about 2:55 really does it for me.
The lyrics and subject matter aren't particularly appealing to me,
though they are thought provoking.
It's similar to how I view Judas Priest today.
When I first heard them, I enjoyed the music and didn't have a clue about the lead singer's personal preferences (and what he was singing about).
And now that I know more about him, I could care less.
I still enjoy the music.
Same for Lola.

As for the best song, The Kinks put out too many good tunes. But I think the most impressive (not counting Victoria) was Shangri-la. I remember reading somewhere that it was Ray Davies' favorite.

What's your favorite song by The Kinks?
I admit it, I made this thread just to plug The Kinks! :)
Answer either or both:
- What's the best song by The Kinks, and why?
- What's your favorite song by The Kinks, and why?
Include a link so people can listen, ideally from Youtube. (Unless someone got there first for your chosen song, in which case you don't need to repeat the link.)

• Tough to choose between the answers and the songs. Great explanation for why you love the song here, and also after you brought it up it's been in my head all week! :)

That could be the song for the summer of 2009... :)
"He's taken everything I've got,
All I've got's this sunny afternoon...
Save me, save me, save me from this squeeze...
In the summertime..."

The song's not about the singer's preferences. More about a young kid who doesn't cotton on at first.
Great answer though.

Sorry, regarding singer's preferences I was referring to Rob Halford of Judas Priest.
For Lola, I simply didn't pay attention to the lyrics when I was in my teens.
And thank you for adding a new phrase to my admittedly limited American vocabulary (cotton on). I like it!

My favorite has to be Victoria. Not only is it the song that got me into 60s rock, but what a song it is. It's been years since I first heard it and I've yet to hear anything by any group that sounds quite so satisfying. As for the best song, The Kinks put out too many good tunes. But I think the most impressive (not counting Victoria) was Shangri-la. I remember reading somewhere that it was Ray Davies' favorite.
