Well, being from America, we have a lot lot lot of internationally-recognized rock bands. Seems kind of unfair. So I've decided to limit myself to current bands from my home of Los Angeles, California.
I'll go with two: Beck and Silversun Pickups. (Yes, yes, I know, Beck is a guy, not a band, but it should still count, dammit! He plays with a lot of the same musicians all the time anyway!)
Here's Beck's "Lost Cause," from one of my favorites of his albums, ''Sea Change'':

And here's Silversun Pickups (not just from my city, but from my neighborhood!) with "Kissing Families":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YiUXl0TwR8
If you like Smashing Pumpkins, I really can't imagine your not liking this band.
Other awesome LA artists I considered writing about: Bad Religion, Frank Black, No Age, Weezer

Thumbs up for Silversun Pickups.... I like the sort of "dirty Veruca Salt" meets "downtempo Metric" vibe they've got going on. "Lazy Eye" is a staple of the local T.O. alternative radio station The Edge and it holds an elusive high rating in my iTunes list.

Right on, Lon - I'm way into Silversun... First heard them playing Rockband and "Lazy Eye" moved me to go check them out. I'm glad I did - a great blend out soft and loud in each song. Dynamic and moving.

This is an interesting question for me because, although I'm from the United States, the majority of my favorite bands are from the United Kingdom (Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Cream, Blind Faith, The Who), and my favorite American artist (Bob Dylan) isn't a band at all (obviously) and the question asks for a band. I had to think this one over for a while, and I came up with The Doors. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dLAv0NklTg

I enjoyed that - Creole + Louis Armstrong = AWESOME. Love that crazy trumpet and clarinet.
Reminds me of something that should be in Fallout 3 (if you play video games).

Glad you like it. The band was named King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band. Louis Armstrong played second cornet to band leader King Oliver's first cornet. Their duet breaks are still considered a high water mark of jazz. Later Louis Armstrong became more famous and some folks label the recordings as if he were a guest star or something. He got his start with King Oliver, who was the "King" of his generation. They are both playing cornet rather than trumpet.

Without question or hesitation my favorite artist from U.S. is Kid Rock. He is American because he has "got the rock of Detroit and the soul from Motown." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFZFeFw4y_8
