Two things have to be present to make a great live recording... first you need a great mix. The instruments and/or vocals need to be clean and sound great. Second you need an awesome performance. A true live performance doesn't have overdubs. As you didn't limit this question to any one style, I'm going to say a live recording that has always blown me away for nailing both of the quality and the performance is by the Dixie Dregs at the Montreux Jazz Festival, which is the second half of the album "Night of the Living Dregs." There is a really unusual song called Leprechaun Promenade that completely blows me away and I'm a pretty good musician. Check it out... it will take you places you haven't gone before... and don't forget, it is live.

What is the best recording of a live song?
I've been listening to lots of live music lately and I was wondering what you all think is the best live song. I was just listening to a recording of "Get Back" by the Beatles where they were being arrested, but they just kept on playing. Are there any other cool live recordings like that that I wouldn't know about?
(I also like NRBQ's live performance of "12-Bar Blues.")

Fleetwood Mac "Live at the Boston Tea Party" Pt. 1, 2 and 3. Absolutely mind blowing. This is the Peter Green era-Fleetwood Mac, recorded in February, 1970. If you or anyone else aren't familiar with this lineup I recommend you check these albums out. Peter Green, Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer are a force to be reckon with. Some of the best guitar playing you will ever hear.
