What do you think of the WCU Marching Band? This is my college marching band. Read details below for what I want

Go to this site http://www.myspace.com/wcumarchingband

This is my college marching band. There are about 300 people in it. I play trumpet, there were about 40 trumpets that year. The band director arranges the songs.

Part 1:
Scroll down on the left of the page where there are videos. Listen and look at the first 5 videos.
1. Vegas Opener
2. Cirque
3. When I Fall in Love
4. Can't Buy Me Love
5. Grits Ain't Groceries

Write what you think about each of songs...how they march, what you think about the of the arrangements of the songs, how they sound, what instrumental sections or colorguard you like, any cool formations or movements you see, etc. You don't have to use all of those. Just anything you think of.

Part 2:
Tell me what you think of the band in general

Part 3: Simply tell someone about the band if you like it so they can enjoy it too.

The last video is us playing an arrangement of Thriller. In honor of Michael give it a listen.

I'll tip other some other good answers too.

Part 1:
1. In the Vegas Opener, were the people in yellow “Color Guard” or flag twirlers? Sadly I noticed that it seemed like most people where paying attention to the twirling red and white flags. I found the choreography pretty good, I like it when they spell words lol. I think it takes a lot of time to learn how to do these types of things. Part of the song reminded me of a song that was in a school play at my school. Guys and Dolls Jr. The song was “Luck Be A Lady” I think. Lol, well it went luck be a lady tonight luck if you’ve ever been a lady to begin with luck be a lady tonight or something like that. Like I started to notice the song at 1:14, maybe a little sooner. Anyways the Color Guard and the Band looked like they spent a good amount of time working on the song and display.

2. In the Cirque, I loved how it started out! The music was very nice. At 1:09 did the people in front kneel down? That is pretty cool if they did. Goodness, so much movement. The music seems fun and playful. At like 2:23 the wave type looking thing that the bad did was awesome. Nice finish.

3. In When I Fall In Love, it was very beautiful. The marching matched the song very well, it was not quick movement, some marching bands seem to clash the movement with the music. Lol, I love color guard. The flags. Hmm I noticed a lot of what sounded like trumpet solos, did they use a microphone? Was it always the same person. I am not sure if you will be able to answer all of these questions but that’s ok. I am just curious.

4. In Can't Buy Me Love, Perfect song to go after When I Fell In Love, what a strong start. Marching and playing an instrument is kind of hard, either you have to have the music memorized or have a gawky stand on the instrument which is annoying, Hmm do they have to remember the music or is it on a stand. At 2:09 ahh they all bunched up. Kind of sounds like the music is bunched lol. Aww they all kneeled down and let one person play. Color Guard is messing up a little bit. Ahh too close to the stands lol. Made the crowd go wild lol. But it’s not over yet! WOW Really close up song next

5. In Grits Ain't Groceries, The close up song starting, I find this kind of strange. Color guard looks like they are having fun with all of their around the worlds and butterflies, those are moves. I still do not like that the band is so close, I am sorry. But for being so close to each other they did a good job.
Yes, I realize that the people in the first one are color guard now. This is stated in the question. I was just writing as I watched and writing what I thought and that’s what I thought.

Part 2:
The band in general did a very good job. I loved the solos and I love how they started their songs where they left off on their last songs. Hmm, What is your school fighting song? Does a University even have one? Sorry, I might be asking to many questions in my answer, lol, what a silly answer. Anyways, sorry, back to the points. I think the videos might not do the band justice because we can not really see the whole thing sometimes.

Part 3: I have, my mom liked it lol, and I am letting other people know too don’t worry. (^_^)V
Source(s):
Personal thoughts as I watched, Hope you enjoy (^_^)V P.S. it might be jumble blabber, lol. My thoughts are strange, and jump all over, but that is part of having ADHD lol. But still, enjoy. It does not mean I am stupid or anything so I think my answer is nice.

Thank you for you comments. You don't have to apologize for saying too much or asking to much as long as you don't mind all my reading what I wrote back haha.

1.Yeah that was the colorguard with the flags. People may be paying attention to one group of the cologuard but through the while show they move around all over the field. So, people see everyone. Yes, that was Luck Be a Lady Tonight. My band director is a really great arranger and throws in other songs. Like if you listen, the last time it sound like luck be a lady tonight, he makes the word tonight turn right into the song, "Tonight, tonight from West Side Story. And yeah the band does take a lot of time to prepare. We practice 2 hours 3 times a week. It is a bunch of hard music and hard marching moves. A lot of college band nowadays get it simpler formations and stand in place and play a lot. But wcu is constantly moving.

2.Yeah everyone kneeled down in front so that everyone could see the trumpets playing alone easier. I'm actually playing that part. And yeah the ripple things was great. People watching liked it a lot, but when we play at the end of high school competition for the high school band kids who know how to march, they when nuts for it haha.

3. No microphones for the solos, just have to play loud enough to project. The solos were actually 2 different trombone players. Especially the last one goes so high that you wouldn't think it was a trombone. And before the solo what you have to understand is that when you are actually there you'd hear it build up to this incredibly loud sound that you can't get from the video and then silence. Haha it'd be a cool effect cause even sometimes I was like holy crap.

4. Yeah all the music is memorized. Yeah 2:09 sounds bunched up, it sounds clearer in person but we could have played it better. In person, bunching up wouldn't just sound like we were bunched up. Being so close would make the band sound a lot louder. And you'd see the band dancing around having fun.

5.The point of being close to the stands is that we are playing this at the end of a high school competition. Imagine being a high school student cheering for a band during for 4 songs and you are really what the band is doing and how they sound. Now imagine how good it feels when the band come right up to you close takes their hats off and plays an encore song loud and right there in front of you looking in your eyes. So I guess it's about the personal connection with the audience. Some high school bands might only have like 60-100 people, so when they see 300 people standing in front of them playing or like 40 of just one instrument they really enjoy it.

Yeah we have a fight song it's called abc Ram's fight
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usDaYhodIkE
It doesn't sound as good as it should cause all you can hear is the clarinet and flutes in this recording lol

The videos don't really give it justice. The marching looks better close up and the sound is a lot more loud and power.

Oh my goodness, thank you for giving such a good response to my answer. That was very kind of you, I really did not expect you to, but I am very glad you did.

1. I was in color guard. I loved it. Yes people do see everyone, after a while my eyes did not really even notice the Color Guard. Yeay I like that song "Luck Be A Lady Tonight" Lol are you shocked that I knew what it was lol, I wish I could have noticed what other songs were in the bands. But I did not stay in band that long, I dropped out before high school. I played Alto Sax. Wow, yea, I listened to it again and I could tell the song transition, that is amazing! Your band director did a very good job. Yea, I liked seeing the movement.

2. Awesome. Yea the ripple or what I called the wave lol,.was awesome, nice to know that it is more of a ripple than a wave.Lol.Marching is annoying but kind of fun. You guys do heel-toe right? Sorry one question.

3. Wow, the people who were playing the solos loud must have some LUNGS. Lol. Goodness. Oh so it was 2 players, that were trombones, wow, yes that was really high. when I tried trombone I could barely get a note lol. Yea, bands are very cool. I would love to be able to hear the songs live, it is so much better when people do.

4. Yeah, our band teacher told us that it is kind of bad to memorize music but she had us do it anyways lol. She said that it will make us forget to read sheet music. But that is awesome that they memorized it. But then again you said the practiced for 2 hours 3 times a week. Yeah, I thought it was funny how some people in the stand ran forward.

5. Yeah, it would be pretty cool, the sound would be like BAM! Lol right there. Yeah personal connection is good. Hmm, good thing no one hit each other with their instruments lol.

yeah we do heel-toe rolling the foot marching. The ripple was basically all of us turning around at a certain time. Like one diagonal line would turn on count one then the next on count 2, and when it got to count 16, we all turned around a once and played. It was a fast turn around my mouthpiece feel out one time haha.

That's cool you were in colorguard. The college colorgaurd is amazing, my high school one was awful. They couldn't learn simple stuff even after a whole season. Sax is a cool instrument. It's my second favorite to play. Memorizing music is not bad for marching band. For concert band and learning music in general, your teacher is correct that you should learn through reading music. But for marching band we get the music, then it is expected that we practice it enough to memorize it cause it looks dumb if you are marching with music. I'm getting ready to do a recital this fall and it actually helps to memorize the music I am going to be looking at, cause when I look at it I know it that much better.

Rushing up right in front of the stands, all the trumpet always rush up right in the front haha. It's funny, the high school kids freak out like you are some celebrity or something. Cause it's so loud lol. My one friend say that at home football games in the stand the one time when we played the first part of the fight song right in front of the stands it was so loud he could feel the vibrations going through his body haha.

Cool, the band got invited to play at Indianapolis this year at this huge nation wide high school competition. I guess we'll be play at the end of it. I ruptured my achilles tendon though so I probably can't march this year.

I have no basis for commenting of the formations, so I am gonna leave that alone. I found some of the song selection odd. When I fall in love for example was so slow and not the type of song that "will work" at a football event in my opinion. The songs that tend to be successful as far as the crowd getting into it are the upbeat/disco jams such as earth wind & fire etc. Overall you guys sound great, considering what the audio has been captured on. I am an audio engineer and am stuck up when it comes to sound quality ... but that was prolly not within your control. The only other comment or suggestion I would make is that I need more cowbell. LoL. But seriously, in the thriller video I could barely make out the drum-line. Not sure whats going on there ... they just getting drowned out or what. Again, this could be because of how the audio is being captured.

Here is a video of my college band to compare with yours.

Yeah the thriller video the drumline is drowned out because it's just a taping of the band at a football game. It's not a special audio recording or anything. Same goes with the other songs. In my experience seeing a lot of bands, most marching bands usually have at least 1 slow song in their halftime show. The slow song is usually about showing off marching technique and musicality and blend. I listened to the clips of your college band. I'm not sure if I liked the first song, seemed kind of easy for a halftime song. But I liked the trombone clip, the trombone sliding up and down sounded sounded really cool.
