What do club owners look for the most when booking a band?

What's are the most important things a band can do to improve their chances of booking a gig. Actual club owner responses would be the best.

Do people come to your shows is # 1.

Depending on the venue, it helps to be flexible. Can you play an acoustic set? Can you shrink a set down to 25 minutes? can you play a 2 hour set?

Also club owners want to see that you self promote. Leaving a "paper trail" of previous shows on the internet is a good idea. Does that make sense? Blog entries, flyers, videos (a online video of you playing to a large crowd is evidence you can fill a room)

I am not a club owner but I am a gigging musician with lots of experience booking shows and talking with owners

If you can bring people in, do you have an fanbase?

The more people you bring in, the more drinks the bar sells.

The most important thing that a band can do for a club owner is bring in people. You should be able to point to shows you have done before, tell the club owner how many tickets you sold to those, etc. If you haven't played a single show before, you might want to start trying to get a slot on a matinee, which many clubs put on. You can show your enthusiasm by doing things like showing up a week before your show with flyers and posters. They're also looking for a band that is professional, that shows up on time, that are respectful of their staff.

But the bottom line is that you need to be able to bring in an audience. Don't lie about being able to bring in more people than you can. If all you think you can do is 20 people, don't tell the club owner you can do 50. Thats one way to make sure you never play there again.
