string 1 = high E (highest pitch, thinnest string, closest to ground)
string 2 = B
string 3 = G
string 4 = D
string 5 = A
string 6 = low E (lowest pitch, thickest string, closest to ceiling)

The names of the six open strings are letters: E, A, D, G, B, and E again. Here's a fun way to remember the names and order of the strings: Every Adult Dog Growls, Barks, Eats.
