Not much comparison at all, the current MIM strats are great guitars (depending on model) the Roadworn series play very nice, and though the MAP is around $999, musicians friend regularly does fender friday blowouts on various models. I've seen roadworn's for $499 new, and Kenny Wayne signature models similarly priced.
As I recall the early 90's MIM's had inferior pickups and hardware to their US counterparts. Current MIM's have tex-mex pickups which are actually quite good sounding.
As with any mass produced guitar, you've got to play a bunch to find one that sounds good, and set up can be atrocious at chain stores like GC and Sam Ash. But in the sub $800 category, there aren't alot of guitars that can touch a good MIM strat or tele
