Hi,
I've been playing with creating and recording music for years now (even have a degree in it), and finally a question i feel i can give a good answer on!
For recording/editing/mixing/mastering I'd have to recommend ProTools. Its quite daunting when you first start it, but its a industry standard program for a damn good reason. You need Digidesign hardware for it, but for £70-100 you can get some pretty good USB soundcards (normally branded M-Audio) that come with a slightly cut down version of ProTools called ProTools M-Powered. I've been using this at home for years and I can't imagine life without it. If you want entirely free, you should be able to find Cubase 5 somewhere on the internet.
For synthesis, Reason 4 is by far the best software program out there, and is also very well supported by other users so with google you should be able to get started! I have to say, the learning curve is steep and I am still constantly finding new ways to work and make sounds after using the program for years. You should also be able to find this for free hidden in the internet. If you want more realistic drums or piano sounds, there are some fantastic addon packs for reason out there.
Hope this helped, message me if you have other questions!

insight on some synth software/hardware or other music creation software.
I have always been fascinated with music, I would like to call myself adept at singing, and understanding what makes up the parts of the music, for what I have known in head knowledge, I have lacked in skill of instruments. The opposite goes with computers, I excel in almost every aspect of them (except for printers but that's a different story) This lead to a fascination with synthesized and other computer generated music. I want to get some good synth/music editing software/equipment for a decent price. Free is always great, I have audacity for music editing, but other editing software would be great too. It has to be either windows or Ubuntu Linux. Thanks sooo much! My price range is in the sub 500 dollar range! Thanks again!
EDIT: Also any general music creation software.

• I had heard of Reason before, and since then I have looked into it, and love the software so far... And there is a 50% student discount which I qualify for, so he pretty much answered everything I asked.

FLStudio is great and it's a free demo download (also for purchase) that even allows you to save tracks as an mp3, but with the demo you can't edit them. Find here: http://flstudio.image-line.com/ Also the MiniMogueVA is a great Moog tool and a free download here: http://www.home.no/gunnare/downloads.htm
